Violence in elephants

Yes, that news story about the elephants was very sad and impressive. In

my experience during the American civil rights movement, one of the key

factors in changing the attitudes of white people (a crucial element) was a

book called "Black Like Me" in which the white author related the painful

experiences he endured after he pharmaceutically darkened the colour of his

skin.

What you've got with the elephant story is a powerful way of de-demonising

the perpetrators of violence who are themselves victims. Many people who

would never have the time or inclination to read Alice Miller or listen to

Bob Johnson will have seen those aggressive elephants--and understood the

connection between the deprivation they suffered and that behaviour. It's

a simple and moving analogy.
