Dear Physician:

Please examine the enclosed CORPORAL PUNISHMENT EXEMPTION form.

In the very near future, this organization will begin circulating

this form in the 23 U.S. states that still permit schoolchildren

to be beaten ("paddled") at school for disciplinary reasons. We

are confident that the form's wide availability in those places

will significantly reduce the incidence of violence against

children. Before we can do this, however, it will be necessary to

have an impressive list of endorsing physicians. Our short-term

goal is 100 names, at which point we will begin making the form

available to families whose children are at risk. Then, as new

endorsers join, we'll add their names to subsequent printings. We

would like to have in excess of 1,000 names by next year this

For many families, particularly in the rural south where pupil-

beating is ubiquitous, this document will be their first

encounter with an authoritative statement opposing the practice.

And we believe no one is better qualified to make that statement

than members of the medical profession.

Please think of this as an opportunity for you to participate in

making our society a less violent place for children, and thereby

a less violent place for everybody.

May we add your name to the list? Please let us know. If you

agree, please copy this letter, add your name and telephone

number in the space provided and return it to PTAVE, P.O. Box

1033, Alamo, CA 94507-7033.

Jordan Riak,

Executive Director
